Industrial Idealist: Home...Tell me a Story

Updated: Feb 5, 2019

Industrial Design may seem cold, uninviting, even harsh to most people. The stark contrast of black and white, the minimal, meager use of furniture and the lack of art, color, and pattern can make a space lack personality and vibrance. But Industrial Design really isn't about making a space sterile and purely utilitarian. Rather it's about optimizing the function, value, and appearance of the space and furniture.

Industrial Idealists are those who are seek a perfect balance of function, value and appearance in their home and life. They're often imaginative and persistent - constantly creating, constantly pursuing. They have a strong inclination to appreciate and preserve the past while keeping a keen eye on the future and emerging technologies. Living like an Industrial Idealist means their is a story, a goal, a purpose behind everything you do.

You might be an Industrial Idealist if...

...you value the past but have a keen eye for the future

Industrial Idealists pursue high principles in their life. They generally seek to make a better world for themselves and those around them. So while they support emerging technologies and new methods that will improve life around the globe, they won't allow the past be sacrificed and forgotten. They preserve history, embrace nature, and constantly learn from the world around them.

...you enjoy connecting with others

Connecting with others is a priority for Idealists. They feed off conversation and friendly debate. They love entertaining and hanging out with family or friends. If there's a special cause or new movement in their city, they're likely to get involved - or at least research what it's all about. They're constantly keeping up with Political and news articles because they want to know what's going on in the world around them. And they aren't afraid to share their opinion on anything.

...you value both function and appearance

Industrial Idealists don't believe in "art for art's sake". Everything has a function. Everything has a purpose. This is reflected in their fashion sense and their home style. Pieces must be both multi-functional and stylish. Thus, Idealists might be drawn to more utilitarian style pieces. They tend to add drama, color, and flare to their home, wardrobe, and life in small accent pieces.

...you're independent and like to do things yourself

If you or a friend has a can-do, go-getter type of attitude, you might be an Industrial Idealist. You might see Idealists taking on a DIY project or a full renovation because they aren't the type to sit on the sidelines of life. Typically, Industrial Designers are methodical planners that like to think through projects and scenarios before making a big decision.

...you have bold, dramatic style but you accent it with simple, tasteful pieces

Idealists tend to have a lot of life experience - they've traveled places, seen things, and done all the things. So their style is often based on their life experience. They incorporate bold accents from travels, found items from other cities, and modern trends they've seen online. In the end, their home is not about a look, but rather about the people and ideas that they encountered throughout life.

Ultimately, Industrial Idealists want a home that tells a story - a story of their family, their travels; a story of history and geography; a story even about the future that's emerging before them. Their home will be a compilation of worldly treasures and sophisticated style.
