Where to Start Decorating

A common struggle I hear from friends and followers is that they just don't know where to start decorating their new home or even just a room in their home! And because they don't know where to start, they just never do any decorating! This is such a shame in my book because, while I know decorating can be overwhelming, it really is easy to find a jumping off point to decorate your room. So today, I am going to share with you 5 ways you can start decorating your home or room when you don't know where to start!

A great place to start (and this is a bonus!) is to take an Interior Design Style Quiz. This will tell you what style you are most attracted to and help you search for furniture and images that are similar. Take my Decorating Style Quiz today and find out your style so you can start decorating your home!

5 Ways to Start Decorating your Room when you Don't Know Where to Start

Let's start by talking about the wrong place to start. Most people start decorating a room by picking a paint color. Wrong! Paint colors are actually one of the LAST things you should pick in your room. Its easier to match a paint color to a fabric you like than vice versa. So don't get overwhelmed trying to pick a paint color for your room as you set out decorating. Try one of these 5 things to jumpstart your decorating.

1. Find a statement Piece

Whether its a piece of art, a statement chandelier, or a funky ottoman, find a statement piece for your room that really speaks to you. It may be art you purchased on your honeymoon. Or maybe its a light fixture you fell in love with. Use this as the center of your design and start decorating around this statement piece. If your statement piece has color or pattern, use those colors and patterns in your room to create balance and cohesion. When you don't know where to start decorating a unique antique or decorative wallpaper can really help set you on the right path.

2. Find a focal point

Deciding on a focal point for your room can be a great place to start decorating. But a focal point isn't limited to just a wall or architectural feature. It can be a large area rug that captures the colors and patterns you want in your room. It could be a fireplace mantle display or gallery wall of art. If you have a favorite pin or inspiration picture, think about recreating it in your room and then start decorating around that!

3. Pick a fabric or pattern

A fabric or pattern can really help you get started decorating your room or home. Patterns can be found in wallpapers, fabrics, rugs, and decor. So if you have a pattern or piece of fabric that you really love - use that as the jumping off point to decorating your room. Match paint colors to the fabric and use similar colors and patterns in your room design.

4. Choose a Color Palette

A color palette, not paint colors, is a great way to get inspired when you don't know where to start decorating. I love looking at color palettes created on the Design Seeds blog. Finding a color palette for your room can help you determine the direction you want to go with paint, upholstery, decor, and artwork. So once you decide on the colors, it can be easier to choose actual furniture, art, and accessories.

5. Create a Moodboard

Creating a concept or mood board for your space can really capture all the ideas you have into one place. It helps you get a focused, cohesive look for your room. Once you have a design mood board or concept board, you can use that as your guide to shop for furniture and pick paint colors for your space.
