8 Storage Solutions for Small Kitchens from Ikea

Updated: Mar 29, 2019

Small kitchens full of stuff can be the worst. You can't find anything. You can't work with a cluttered countertop. And stuff just gets thrown all over the place! I know what its like to live in a small kitchen...sometimes without a pantry...sometimes with barely enough walking space. It can make cooking or baking even more of a chore because you're constantly digging for dishes or trying to find a spot to put down a hot baking sheet! Creating storage solutions for small kitchens is all about being creative with the space you have.

8 Storage Solutions for Small Kitchens from Ikea

1. Display your Spices instead of Storing Them

There are lots of ways to get creative with your spice rack! Don't just automatically take up a cabinet with all those bottles or a turn table. Think about adding magnetic strips to the under side of your cabinets and top of your spices. They can then "hang" below your upper cabinets. Or add a narrow shelf to the side of a blank cabinet or above your kitchen or stove. Let your spices be a decorative - and conveniently accessible - display!

2. Buy Cabinet Organizers

The biggest waste of space in kitchens is not having tupperware, pots, pans, dishes, or staple pantry items stored and stacked properly in cabinets. Invest in some simple cabinet organizers that pull out for quick and easy storage. You'll be able to maximize your storage potential when everything has a place!

3. Add Magnets or Cork to the inside of your Cabinets Doors

Use the inside of your cabinets doors as storage for small utensils, measuring spoons, recipes, and more! Simply add a magnetic strip or cork board to the inside of your upper cabinet door. Add magnets to your measuring cups and spoons or hang with a pin in the corkboard.

4. Use Vertical Wall and Window Space

Get creative with the space you do have by adding storage to walls and windows. You can use suction cups to attach floating shelves to your windows for extra drying space or to storage your dish soap, sponges, and cleaning tools. Add magnetic strips, peg boards, or hooks to blank wall where you are able. This will get things like knives, towels, and small kitchen gadgets out of drawers and cabinets.

5. Add a Shelf above your Entry Doors

Add a floating shelf or open cubby above (and also around if possible) entryway doors. This will provide extra storage for large pots or cookbooks.

6. Invest in a Double-duty Stove Top or Sink Cover

If you're limited on countertop space, invest in a stovetop or sink cover that can double as a cutting board. Since these are usually slim, you can store it between your refrigerator and cabinet or wall. Pull it out when you are baking, chopping, or just need additional counter space for items.

7. Use a Rolling Cart

Adding a rolling cart or bar cart to your Kitchen can give you additional storage and countertop space. Plus, when its in the way, it can be easily rolled out to another room!

8. Add a Hanging Rod to Store Pots and Pans

If you have high ceilings or space above your stove, consider adding a rod for hanging large utensils and small pots and pans. This will free up drawer and cabinet space for those larger, more difficult to store items.
